LA might get all the shine for the burgeoning beat scene, but a few states over in Colorado, producer Alex B (a.k.a. Alex Botwin) has been quietly setting up an abstract, instrumental fiefdom of his own. (That’s why we recently tapped him to host the Denver edition of our ongoing City Guide series for XLR8R TV.) As head of Elm and Oak, which functions as a record label, design shop, and clothing line, Botwin’s talents aren’t limited to just beatmaking, although his debut album, Moments, certainly garnered plenty of attention when it dropped earlier this year. Next week, he’ll be setting off on a massive US tour—check the litany of dates here—and as a little preview, he’s assembled this exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast. It’s a layered, at times psychedelic, journey through hip-hop beats, dubstep brawn, and bedroom-studio skronk that nicely showcases Botwin’s talents; as it happens, he either produced or remixed half the songs here. Throw in some unreleased gems from like-minded beat producers, and this podcast is poised to get any beat freak salivating.

Dan Witz is an amazing street artist. He has been creating intense imagery in public places for years. His new project “WHAT THE %$#@” is definitely on a WTF tip. Dan is installing these pieces in areas of high traffic and areas that bottleneck and tend to get congested so that drivers will be faced with these amazing/creepy images while captive in their automobiles. I also included a couple of older images of Dans work where he produces realistic hummingbirds (drop shadow and all) in urban settings. These where the first of Dan Witz pieces that is saw and they totally blew me away. Also make sure you check out Dan Witz : In Plain View 30 Years of Artworks Illegal and Otherwise a new book spanning Dans entire career.

Shouts to XLR8R

One of the more serene moments from this year’s outstanding Flying Lotus album,Cosmogramma, “MmmHmm” is a number so vivid and specific sounding, most everyone who’s heard the song has probably conjured their own ideas of visuals to pair with it. And most likely, they all have something to with floating in space, so thankfully the folks behind this video, Special Problems, didn’t disappoint. Pristine imagery of a constantly moving meteor sets the vibe for “MmmHmm” in which two inhabitants float into each other’s arms before launching into a handful of videogame-esque motifs and other assorted mind-boggling special effects. The results are as intricately arranged, wholly captivating, and slightly confusing as Flying Lotus’ production itself. (via Self-Titled)
